The Importance of Sanitation and Safety in the Lash Industry

The Importance of Sanitation and Safety in the Lash Industry

This week, I had a new customer who chose not to return to her previous lash artist after witnessing improper sanitation practices. She observed the lash artist cleaning their tools with disinfecting wipes. In our area, this is not sufficient for proper sanitation. Here in Durham, tools like tweezers must first be scrubbed with antibacterial soap to remove dirt and debris. After that, they must be soaked in an approved disinfecting solution, such as a medium-level disinfectant, a diluted bleach solution, PreEmpt (CS20), or 70% alcohol.

Moreover, Durham health regulations require salons to maintain log books that track when disinfecting solutions are changed, and these records must be readily available for review during random health inspections. Additionally, cross-contamination of lashes is a serious issue. Any leftover lashes on the lash pallet must be discarded after each client, and the pallet itself should be washed with antibacterial soap before being used again.

This experience reinforced the importance of strict sanitation and safety practices in the lash industry, which are crucial for both the health of our clients and the reputation of our profession. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the key sanitation standards every lash artist should follow to maintain the highest level of safety.

Why Sanitation and Safety Are Critical in Lash Application

Lash extensions involve applying synthetic or natural lashes to the client's natural lashes with an adhesive, which brings the artist into close contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes and skin. Poor sanitation or unsafe application practices can lead to serious health risks, such as infections, allergic reactions, or damage to the natural lashes.

Common Risks of Poor Sanitation

  • Eye Infections: Bacteria or fungi from unsanitized tools or surfaces can cause eye infections such as conjunctivitis.
  • Allergic Reactions: Unsanitary conditions or expired products can lead to reactions, including swelling, redness, and itching.
  • Lash Damage: Improper handling of lash extensions or glue can cause the client's natural lashes to weaken or fall out prematurely.

Ensuring safe lash application means adopting industry-standard practices to mitigate these risks and provide clients with a safe, satisfying experience.

Lash Sanitation Standards Every Artist Should Follow

Maintaining a sanitary environment for lash extension services is a non-negotiable part of running a trusted and successful business. Here are the key standards every lash artist should adhere to:

1. Sanitize Tools and Equipment

After each client session, thoroughly clean and disinfect all tools, including tweezers, scissors, and lash applicators. Use hospital-grade disinfectant and ensure the tools are properly dried before reuse.

  • Tip: Use disposable applicators when possible to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination.

2. Maintain Clean Workspaces

Ensure your work area is cleaned and disinfected between clients. This includes wiping down all surfaces with appropriate cleaning solutions, especially the chair, headrest, and any other surfaces the client comes into contact with.

  • Tip: Keep your workspace organized and clutter-free to make sanitizing easier and more efficient.

3. Hand Hygiene

Proper hand hygiene is critical for avoiding the spread of germs. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after each session. In addition, use hand sanitizer frequently during the lash application process.

  • Tip: Wear gloves during the procedure to add an extra layer of protection.

4. Lash Extension Adhesive Safety

Lash glue contains chemicals that can irritate the eyes or skin if mishandled. Always ensure that the glue is fresh, properly stored, and used within the recommended expiration date. Test for allergies beforehand when using a new type of adhesive on a client.

  • Tip: Provide clients with a patch test 24-48 hours before their appointment to check for possible allergic reactions.

5. Client Education

Educating clients on aftercare and hygiene is essential for maintaining the results of their extensions. Provide detailed instructions on how to clean and care for their lash extensions to avoid infection and prolong their lash life.

  • Tip: Recommend specific products that are gentle and safe for lash aftercare, such as oil-free cleansers.
